The U.S. Department of State, Educational and Cultural Affairs Bureau have just selected Idris as an “ARTS ENVOY”! As one of the Bay Area’s most revered artists he received grant support to journey to South Africa to continue his work in collaboration with Urban Voices Festival inside the Naturena Women’s Prison in Johannesburg, South Africa and then journey on to participate in the National Arts Festival in Grahamstown, South Africa.

Jones, writer Ntozake Shange, his longtime partner actress Rhodessa Jones, and many others. Three previous tours in 2010 and 2011 found Idris performing with THE PYRAMIDS at the Volksbuhn Concert Hall in Berlin, Copenhagen Jazz Festival, Enjoy Jazz Festival in Heidelberg, Germany, Uber Jazz Festival in Hamburg, Germany, and other clubs and venues throughout Europe including the Worldwide Festival in Sete, France.

As the principle composer for THE PYRAMIDS his compositions can be heard on the upcoming release “OTHERWORLDLY” on the Disko B Record label in Munich, Germany.

Idris has rightfully been in the spotlight of late thanks to the awesome collection of his material released on the Japanese EM label The Music of Idris Ackamoor 1971 – 2004 as well as the renewed interest in his 1970′s legendary band, THE PYRAMIDS. IKEF Records of Chicago released all three Pyramids’ albums on vinyl including “Lalibela” (1973), “King of Kings” (1974), and “Birth/Speed/Merging” (1976). In 2004 Idris released his third CD entitled, “Homage to Cuba”.

In 1999 Idris released his second jazz CD entitled, “Centurian” and in 1998 he recorded and released his first CD entitled “Portrait”. Mr. Ackamoor has received many awards for his work including a GOLDIE Lifetime Achievement Award presented by the San Francisco Bay Guardian, two Individual Artists Commissions from the San Francisco Cultural Equity Program, and a Meet the Composer and American Composers Forum grant for writing new music.
